Active and passive mutations

Toxic Tangle divided the system into two layers.

TypeHow it activatesWhat to manage
Active mutationEquip it in an available mutation slotChoose a limited set for the next task
Passive mutationApplies automatically from the current weapon loadoutCarry and use the weapon that supplies the passive

The active layer is where deliberate loadout decisions happen. A passive weapon effect does not need to consume one of those slots. Beat the Heat also added Buggy mutations, with effects tied to the Buggy species or triggered by player actions, so the mount has its own supporting progression.

Unlock and upgrade mutations

Most repeatable mutations reward the same action at rising thresholds.

MutationUnlock or rank thresholdsMain effect

Smasher40, 100, 200 club killsAdds stun to club attacks
Javelineer40, 100, 200 spear killsImproves thrown spear damage and reflects damage

Natural Explorer20, 50, 80 discovered points of interestRaises travel speed outside combat pressure
Cardio FanExhaust stamina 100, 250, 500 timesImproves stamina recovery and exhaustion time
Fresh DefenseEat 1, 5, 10 mint shardsReduces sizzle, sizzle damage, and poison gas damage
Spicy SafetyEat 1, 5, 10 spicy shardsReduces chill, freezing, and shatter pressure

Frenzy uses a story unlock from defeating the Mysterious Stranger. Its rage raises melee damage and regeneration while preventing timed blocks, so equip it only when the build can operate without perfect-block timing.

Mutation loadouts by task

TaskActive prioritiesWhy they fit
Club front lineSmasher, Parry Master, Cardio FanStun, stamina return, and recovery support repeated block-and-swing cycles
Bow opening attackSharpshooter, Ambush, Trapper PEEP.RCharged criticals, unaware-target pressure, and a larger critical multiplier
Dagger or dual wieldAssassin, Ambush, Cardio FanDash-strike criticals and stamina support fast attack loops
Staff combatWhittle Wizard, Cardio Fan, matching elemental defenseElemental output stays paired with stamina and hazard control
Park explorationNatural Explorer, Cardio Fan, Spicy Safety or Fresh DefenseFaster travel and protection chosen for the destination
MIX.R or base defenseGuard Dog, weapon mutation, Cardio FanTurf damage combines with the weapon's core loop and stamina recovery

Treat these as slot priorities. When fewer slots are available, keep the weapon mutation and the effect that solves the activity's main failure point. Add general stamina or critical support only after the core pair is active.

Increase slots and avoid wasted picks

New characters begin with two active mutation slots. Spend normal Milk Molars on the active mutation capacity upgrade to expand the loadout. Mega Milk Molars improve shared inventory limits, so they do not solve this specific slot restriction.

Before leaving a base or Ranger Station:

  1. Equip the weapon intended for the activity and verify its automatic passive.
  2. Fill active slots with effects that trigger during that activity.
  3. Replace exploration speed with combat effects before a boss arena.
  4. Replace general damage with Guard Dog before a MIX.R defense.
  5. Select Fresh Defense or Spicy Safety for the actual environmental hazard.

Mutation strength comes from reliable triggers. A powerful effect that never activates during the next objective provides no value, even when its description looks stronger than a modest stamina or hazard perk.
