Learn active and passive Grounded 2 mutations, exact unlock thresholds, task-based loadouts, and how to expand active slots.
Quick answer
- Active mutations use equipped slots, while weapon passives apply automatically.
- Normal Milk Molars increase the number of active mutations you can equip.
- Weapon mutations progress through 40, 100, and 200 matching creature kills.

Active and passive mutations
Toxic Tangle divided the system into two layers.
| Type | How it activates | What to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Active mutation | Equip it in an available mutation slot | Choose a limited set for the next task |
| Passive mutation | Applies automatically from the current weapon loadout | Carry and use the weapon that supplies the passive |
The active layer is where deliberate loadout decisions happen. A passive weapon effect does not need to consume one of those slots. Beat the Heat also added Buggy mutations, with effects tied to the Buggy species or triggered by player actions, so the mount has its own supporting progression.
Unlock and upgrade mutations
Most repeatable mutations reward the same action at rising thresholds.
| Mutation | Unlock or rank thresholds | Main effect |
|---|---|---|
| Lil Fist | 40, 100, 200 fist kills | Builds unarmed attack power |
| Smasher | 40, 100, 200 club kills | Adds stun to club attacks |
| Javelineer | 40, 100, 200 spear kills | Improves thrown spear damage and reflects damage |
| Assassin | 40, 100, 200 dagger kills | Improves dash-strike critical play |
| Sharpshooter | 40, 100, 200 bow kills | Raises fully charged bow critical chance |
| Blademaster | 40, 100, 200 sword kills | Weakens enemy damage and supports sword stamina flow |
| Whittle Wizard | 40, 100, 200 staff kills | Enhances staff elemental effects |
| Parry Master | 30, 80, 150 perfect blocks | Restores stamina on a perfect block |
| Ambush | 30, 80, 150 ambush attacks | Adds critical pressure against unaware creatures |
| Guard Dog | 1, 4, 9 MIX.R completions | Raises damage against creatures attacking your turf |
| Natural Explorer | 20, 50, 80 discovered points of interest | Raises travel speed outside combat pressure |
| Cardio Fan | Exhaust stamina 100, 250, 500 times | Improves stamina recovery and exhaustion time |
| Fresh Defense | Eat 1, 5, 10 mint shards | Reduces sizzle, sizzle damage, and poison gas damage |
| Spicy Safety | Eat 1, 5, 10 spicy shards | Reduces chill, freezing, and shatter pressure |
Frenzy uses a story unlock from defeating the Mysterious Stranger. Its rage raises melee damage and regeneration while preventing timed blocks, so equip it only when the build can operate without perfect-block timing.
Mutation loadouts by task
| Task | Active priorities | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|
| Club front line | Smasher, Parry Master, Cardio Fan | Stun, stamina return, and recovery support repeated block-and-swing cycles |
| Bow opening attack | Sharpshooter, Ambush, Trapper PEEP.R | Charged criticals, unaware-target pressure, and a larger critical multiplier |
| Dagger or dual wield | Assassin, Ambush, Cardio Fan | Dash-strike criticals and stamina support fast attack loops |
| Staff combat | Whittle Wizard, Cardio Fan, matching elemental defense | Elemental output stays paired with stamina and hazard control |
| Park exploration | Natural Explorer, Cardio Fan, Spicy Safety or Fresh Defense | Faster travel and protection chosen for the destination |
| MIX.R or base defense | Guard Dog, weapon mutation, Cardio Fan | Turf damage combines with the weapon's core loop and stamina recovery |
Treat these as slot priorities. When fewer slots are available, keep the weapon mutation and the effect that solves the activity's main failure point. Add general stamina or critical support only after the core pair is active.
Increase slots and avoid wasted picks
New characters begin with two active mutation slots. Spend normal Milk Molars on the active mutation capacity upgrade to expand the loadout. Mega Milk Molars improve shared inventory limits, so they do not solve this specific slot restriction.
Before leaving a base or Ranger Station:
- Equip the weapon intended for the activity and verify its automatic passive.
- Fill active slots with effects that trigger during that activity.
- Replace exploration speed with combat effects before a boss arena.
- Replace general damage with Guard Dog before a MIX.R defense.
- Select Fresh Defense or Spicy Safety for the actual environmental hazard.
Mutation strength comes from reliable triggers. A powerful effect that never activates during the next objective provides no value, even when its description looks stronger than a modest stamina or hazard perk.
