Grounded 2 Omni-Tool Upgrades: Costs and Tool Tiers
Compare every available Omni-Tool upgrade, Raw Science cost, required material, and gathering unlock, including the Omni-Clipper and Tier 4 axe.
Quick answer
- Buy tool functions and tier upgrades at a Ranger Station using Raw Science and materials.
- Unlock each lower tier before purchasing the next tier of that same function.
- Start with Hammer I and Shovel I to open basic rock, acorn, clay, and grub gathering.
- Use the Omni-Clipper for underwater plants; the axe currently reaches Tier 4.

How to upgrade the Omni-Tool
Grounded 2 Omni-Tool upgrades are purchased at a Ranger Station. Each function has its own tiers, material requirements, and Raw Science cost. Unlocking Axe II leaves your hammer, shovel, wrench, and clipper at their existing levels. Buy the preceding tier of a function before its next upgrade.
The tables below cover the available upgrades as of September 8, 2026. Costs apply to the individual purchase, so reaching a later tier also requires the earlier purchases in that column of progression.
If the first terminal is still inaccessible, follow the opening quest from Snackbar Ranger Outpost through the marked tunnel into the Communications Array, then answer the phone. The Omni-Tool itself comes from the outpost wall with Axe I already installed.
Choose the next function by the resource you need
Spend your next upgrade on the resource blocking your next recipe. A higher axe tier cannot satisfy a hammer or shovel requirement.
| Immediate goal | Upgrade to prioritize | What it opens |
|---|---|---|
| Break acorns and basic mineral nodes | Hammer I | Acorns, Brittle Marble, and Brittle Quartzite |
| Dig clay and grubs | Shovel I | Basic digging and materials needed for Wrench I |
| Repair damaged structures | Wrench I | The tool's repair function |
| Cut stronger plants and feathers | Axe II | Husky Weeds, mushrooms, and Crow Feathers |
| Gather tougher minerals and candy | Hammer II | Sturdy upgrade stones, fresh mint, and spicy candy |
| Dig up gum and buried resources | Shovel II | Gum Nuggets and buried treasure |
| Harvest pond vegetation | Clipper I | Eelgrass gathering underwater |
For a new world, Hammer I and Shovel I each cost only 350 Raw Science and use basic materials. Together they broaden gathering access before the more expensive creature-part upgrades. After that, choose the function required by your next equipment or building recipe.
Chopping and breaking upgrade costs
The gathering examples identify useful additions at each tier. Higher tiers also retain access to earlier nodes.
Omni-Axe
| Tier | Raw Science | Materials | Gathering examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Included | Obtain the Omni-Tool | Grass, clover, dandelions, blueberries |
| II | 2,000 | 2 Roach Chunks, 2 Blueberry Leather | Crow Feathers, Husky Weeds, Lingonberries, mushrooms |
| III | 3,000 | 2 Praying Mantis Claws, 3 Black Ant Mandibles | Bur Weeds, lint, pumpkin weak spots, small wasp hives |
| IV | 4,000 | 1 Infused Ooze, 2 Striped Scorpion Pincers | Pupa Hide |
Tier IV is the current obtainable axe ceiling. Do not reserve materials for an Axe V recipe: that tier is unavailable. Infused Ooze makes Axe IV a later progression target, so use the lower tiers to complete the gathering tasks already within reach.
Omni-Hammer
| Tier | Raw Science | Materials | Gathering examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 350 | 2 Pebblets, 1 Sap | Acorns, Milk Molars, brittle upgrade stones |
| II | 2,000 | 1 Ladybug Head, 3 Lingonberry Leather | Charcoal, Mega Milk Molars, sturdy upgrade stones |
| III | 3,000 | 3 Gunpowder Clumps, 1 Potato Beetle Head | Garden Snail Shells, pinecones, rusty nails, supreme upgrade stones |
Hammer IV and V are unavailable. Reaching Axe IV does not unlock those hammer tiers. Also check the leather type before leaving for the terminal: Axe II takes Blueberry Leather, while Hammer II takes Lingonberry Leather.
Digging and repair upgrade costs
Omni-Shovel
| Tier | Raw Science | Materials | Gathering examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 350 | 1 Grass Seeds, 2 Sprigs | Clay and grubs |
| II | 3,000 | 1 Northern Scorpion Stinger, 2 Pine Needles | Gum, large clay nodes, buried treasure, potato eyes |
| III | 5,000 | 1 Snake Scale, 2 Green Shield Bug Parts | Sunken Bones, Koi Fish Scales, Snake Scales |
Shovel III is an important pond progression purchase because Sunken Bones also appear in the final clipper recipe. Gather the Snake Scale and Green Shield Bug Parts before committing to a deeper resource trip.
Omni-Wrench
| Tier | Raw Science | Materials | Repair function |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 1,000 | 2 Red Ant Parts, 2 Clay | Basic repairs |
| II | 2,500 | 3 Gum Nuggets, 2 Rust Beetle Parts | Stronger repairs, including the Veggie Garden and Candy Processing Facility leaky valves |
Wrench II also handles the water inlets used around the King Dozer encounter. Wrench III is unavailable. If a valve requires the upgraded wrench, spending Science on a gathering function will not clear that requirement.
Underwater Omni-Clipper upgrades
The Into the Abyss update added the Omni-Clipper for underwater harvesting. Its progression is separate from the axe.
| Tier | Raw Science | Materials | Gathering examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 1,000 | 1 Water Boatman Fin, 2 Wax | Eelgrass |
| II | 2,000 | 1 Diving Bell Spider Chunk, 2 Crow Feather Pieces | Diving Bell Sacs, Horsetail, Purple Jelly Fungus |
| III | 3,000 | 1 Toe Biter Claw, 2 Sunken Bones | Cattails, Pond Moss, Soggy Roots |
For the first tier, look for Water Boatmen in the pond and Bridge waters and collect Wax from lily pads. For Clipper II, budget for Axe II as well if you still need to harvest Crow Feathers. For Clipper III, prepare the Shovel III materials before setting out to dig Sunken Bones.
Tool tiers and Glitter Bar customization
The Glitter Bar changes the Omni-Tool's appearance. It is found at specific ransacked Ominent Outposts and has a different purpose from the tier purchases at Ranger Stations. Check the tier shown for the required function whenever a resource remains blocked after changing the tool's look.
